Sister M. Urban Kaumans CSC

Sister M. Urban (Magdalen Saide Kaumans) C.S.C., was born in Grand Island, Neb., April 24, 1917, daughter of Joseph Kaumans and Catherine Wagner Kaumans. She was one of five girls and two boys in the family. Sister died April 17, 2001, following a prolonged illness, at Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, Ind. Sister is survived by nieces and nephews.

 

Reception of the body and wake service will be held at 4 p.m., today, April 18, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's Notre Dame, Ind. Funeral Mass will be in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 19, followed by interment at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's Notre Dame.

 

Sister M. Urban entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, Jan. 15, 1938. She had worked a year following graduation from Judge Memorial High School, Salt Lake City, Utah, and her oldest sister, Sister M. Liberata, C.S.C., helped prepare her for the novitiate. She made first vows Aug. 15, 1940. Sister was assigned to ancillary services at Salt Lake City, Utah, Woodland, Los Angeles and the Provincial House, Watsonville, Calif.

 

Sister was an elementary teacher at San Mateo, Calif., Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Nev., and was a home visitor in St. Anne's Parish, Las Vegas. At Bishop Glass Center, Salt Lake City, Sister Urban assisted with pastoral care.

 

She became a driver for the community in San Mateo, Calif., then a parish visitor at Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Modesto, Calif., before her retirement to Saint Catherine by the Sea, Ventura, Calif. Sister Urban came to Saint Mary's Convent in 1998 and was active in the ministry of prayer until her death.
