Erwin F. Kowalski

In sorrow, the family announces the passing of Erwin F. Kowalski, 83, on Thursday, July 12.

He was born on Sept. 26, 1917, in South Bend, Ind., to the late Leonard and Johanna Kowalski. He had been a longtime Hobart area resident, coming from South Bend. Erwin had retired after 22 years with the South Bend Police Department, and had also retired from U.S. Steel after 20 years in the plant security. He was a member of the F.O.P. South Bend Lodge #36, Hobart Elks Lodge #1152 and Chesterton Moose Lodge #1623.

 

He is survived by a loving family who will miss him. His wife of 30 years, Letizia (nee Putti); two daughters, Karen De Later and Gale La Scola, both of Elkhart, Ind.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy (late Andrew) Fuze of South Bend and Lucille (Cyril) Landise of Chicago, Ill.,; and by many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Russo.

 

Visitation was from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 14, with a Elks services at 7 p.m. in Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart, and from 2 to 8 p.m. today, July 15, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 16, in St. Hedwig Catholic Church, 331 South Scott Street, South Bend, with Rev. Daryl Rybicki officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in South Bend.
