Leon E. Kowalski Sr.

Ex-justice of the peace Leon Kowalski Sr. dies

 

Leon E. Kowalski Sr., a former Portage Township justice of the peace, died at 6:50pm Tuesday in Healthwin Hospital.  He was 90.

 

Mr. Kowalski, of 1625 E. Cedar St., was appointed to the justice court in 1960, replacing Frank X. Kopinski.  After his appointment, Mr. Kowalski went on to win re-election in 1962 and 1966.  He also was licensed to practice in all federal courts.

‘He served as city judge form 1947-1951.  From 1938 to 1942, he was a member of the At Joseph County Alcoholic Beverage Board.

 

Mr. Kowalski was an attorney, practicing in South Bend since 1934.  He was born February 27, 1903, in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident.  On August 23, 1926, in South Bend, he married Benedictine Paszkiet.  She survives with a daughter, Roberta Hill of Three Oaks; two sons, James of South Bend and Leon E. Jr of Mendocino CA; 10 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.  A son, Leonard, died in 1953.  He was a graduate of Indiana University Law School, and a member of St Joseph County Bar Association, Indiana State Bar Association, Knights of Columbus Council 553 and Elks Lodge No. 235.

 

Services will be at 10am Monday in St Stanislaus Catholic Church.  Burial will be in St Joseph Cemetery.

 

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm Sunday in St Joseph Funeral Home, where a wake will be at 3pm.
