H. Hillier Krieghbaum

MISHAWAKA - H. Hillier Krieghbaum, a former newsman and a New York University journalism faculty member for 25 years, died at 7:30 a.m. Monday in Fountainview Place. He was 90. Mr. Krieghbaum, of 530 Tangelwood Lane, was professor emeritus of New York University, where he had served as chairman of the journalism department from 1957-63. He also taught at other colleges and was the author of 11 books.

He was born Nov. 2, 1902, in South Bend. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and Northwestern University. Before turning to teaching, Mr. Krieghbaum was a United Press reporter in New York City, St. Paul, Minn., Chicago and Washington. He was the winner of numerous journalism awards. His specialty was science writing, and he was referred to in THE QUILL Magazine, a publication for journalists, as the "godfather" of science writing. In 1945, in Washington, D.C., he married Katherine Lancaster. She died in 1959. He is survived by three cousins, Ann Hillier Perkins and Elizabeth Hillier Crofoot both of Mishawaka, and Martha Ginz Shidler of Delray, Fla. A daughter Katherine Krieghbaum, died in 1969.

He was past president of the American Society of Journalism School Administrators and headed the Association for Education in Journalism. He was a veteran of World War 11 and member of the National Association of Science Writers, Society of Professional Journalists, New York City Deadline Club, Society of Silurians, Kappa Tau Alpha and National Conference of Editorial Writers.

Private memorial services will be held. Cremation will take place. Bubb Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Hillier Krieghbaum, a journalism professor at New York University for 25 years, died on Sunday in Mashawaka, Ind., where he was living in retirement. He was 90 and was a former resident of Mamaroneck, N. Y. The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in Columbia, S. C., said his death followed a fall a week earlier.

Professor Krieghbaum taught journalism at N.Y.U. until 1973, when he reached emeritus status. He served a Chairman of the Journalism department from 1957 to 1963. After leaving the university, he taught as a visiting professor at Manhattanville College and Temple University until the late 1970s.

Professor Krieghbaum, a native of South Bend, Ind., graduated from the University of Wisconsin and earned a Master of Science degree at Northwestern University in 1939 after working for United Press in New York City. He served in the Navy in World War 11, reaching the rank of commander. His wife, the former Katherine Lancaster, died in 1959, and his only daughter, also named Katherine, died in 1969.
