Selma Kring

Nov. 10, 1899 - Dec. 6, 2002

South Bend Tribune 12/8/2002

Selma (Morris) Peterson Kring, 103, was born on Nov. 10, 1899, in Van Wert, Ohio, to the late Mattie Bell (Clapper) and John Morris, and passed away on Friday, Dec. 6, in the Milton Home, South Bend, Ind., where she had been a resident since 1996. Who would have thought that this baby would live 12 decades, in three centuries? She was born when everyone traveled by horse and buggy, before airplanes, to a time of passengers on space ships.

In 1917, in South Bend, as Selma Morris, she married Henry Oscar E. Peterson, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Kring was also preceded in death by a son, Owen Wesley Peterson; a grandson, Patrick Dean Moon; a sister, Ella Moon; and by a son-in-law, William Moon. Mrs. Kring is survived by two daughters, Selma Jean (Peterson) Moon of North Liberty, Ind., and Mary Ellen (Peterson) Zell of Dearborn, Mich.; and by eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Kring worked for 26 years for the Bendix Corporation and was a member of the Bendix Union. Prior to working at Bendix, she worked several different jobs during the Depression. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, who truly loved her family and friends, and will be greatly and sadly missed.

There will be no service or visitation for Mrs. Kring. Cremation will take place in the Michiana Crematory, South Bend, and entombment will take place at a later date at the Riverview Cemetery Niche in South Bend. The Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., assisted the family with arrangements. The family requested that memorial contributions be made to either Hospice of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637-3437; or to the Milton Home, 206 East Marion Street, South Bend, IN 46601.
