Sister Marie Anastasia CSC, 90, of Saint Mary’s Convent, died at 1 a.m. Saturday at the convent, after an illness of several months. She served as academic dean at St. Mary’s College from 1948 to 1955, and later in the Provincial Administrative Offices, and as assistant in General Administration. She was born May 11, 1892 as Marie Kurtenbach in Chatsworth, Ill., and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross at St. Mary’s on Sept. 14, 1917, coming from Peoria, Ill. On Aug. 15, 1918 she was received as a novice and three years later made her profession to the Holy Cross order. She was assigned to teaching in secondary schools and taught at St. Joseph Academy in South Bend, as well as other secondary school in California; Utah; Anderson, Ind.; and Woodstock, Ill. In 1961 she returned to St. Mary’s to teach and serve as archivist until 1969 when she became a resident of the convert. Among surviving nieces and nephews is a niece, Sister Mercia Scherer CSC, of Our Lady of Holy Cross Convent in South Bend.

 

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday In Our Lady of Loretto Church at St. Mary’s with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery on the campus. Friends may call until the hour of the funeral at the convent parlors, where a wake service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today.
