South Bend Tribune 9/8/2001

Br. Ronald Charles LaLonde, CSC, 69, died on Thursday, September 6, 2001, at St. Joseph Community Hospital, Mishawaka, Indiana, after a lengthy illness. He was born April 15, 1932, in Detroit, Mich., one of two sons and a daughter, children of Earl and Clara (Srock) LaLonde. His brother is deceased; the sister survives.

Br. Ronald was educated in Catholic Schools in Detroit before being employed by the Timken Detroit Axel Co., in 1951. From 1952-54 he served in Korea in the U.S. Army. He returned to the Timken Co., for a year and in June 1955 he entered the Brothers of Holy Cross in Watertown, Wis. He received the habit at St. Joseph's Novitiate, Rolling Prairie, Ind., in August 1955, made his first profession of vows a year later, and his perpetual vows on August 16, 1959.

He studied at St. Edward's University, Austin, Tex., and then served on the faculty of Cathedral High School, Indianapolis, Ind., from 1958-60; St. Joseph High School, South Bend, Ind., 1960-61; Catholic Central High School, Monroe, Mich., 1961-62; again Cathedral H.S. from 1962-70; Catholic Central H.S. again from 1970-87 (in 1986 the name changed to St. Mary/Catholic Center of Monroe H.S.); and from 1987-2000 Gabriel Richard High School, Riverview, Mich. Medical reasons led to his retirement at Schubert Villa, Notre Dame, Ind., in October 2000.

Br. Ronald was a congenial, fun-loving teacher, moderator and member of his local Community of Holy Cross Brothers. His teaching field was English, but his primary interest and acknowledge effectiveness were in student activities outside the classroom, at which he excelled as moderator and unofficial counselor. He was often moderator for the yearbook, of one or another class, and of the cheerleaders. He spent some time as a guidance counselor, then because of his health he moved to Gabriel Richard to become Director of Attendance.

Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. Monday, September 10, at St. Joseph's Chapel, the brothers' Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, 54515 St. Rd. 933. A Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 3:30, with burial immediately afterward in St. Joseph's Cemetery on the Village grounds. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
