Andrew Lizzi, 84, of South Bend, Ind., passed away after succumbing to a long battle with cancer on Monday, April 19, in his home. Andrew was born on Dec. 18, 1919, in South Bend, to the late Carlos and Julia (Fabian) Lizzi.

 

He is survived by his wife, Nina; a daughter, Jackie Umbaugh of South Bend; two sons, Ronald (Linda) Lizzi of Granger, Ind., and Jeffrey (Linda) Lizzi of Bremen, Ind.; seven grandchildren, Kim, Becki, Kathryn, Jim, Ryan, Tom and Taylor; a great-granddaughter, Brittany; and by a brother, Gene (Gloria) Lizzi of South Bend. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Lizzi.

 

Mr. Lizzi attended South Bend Central and went to work for Studebaker for many years and retired from Hamilton Harris. He was a well-known, local, fast-pitch softball pitcher for Martin Dale Insurance, O'Brien's and Grose's Bike Shop. Andrew was an avid Yankees fan, and loved attending and watching Notre Dame football games.

 

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, April 21, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. Funeral services for Andrew will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 22, in the funeral home, with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend.
