Edmund J. Luther, 70, a lifelong resident of South Bend and a businessman in
the community for 38 years, died this morning in St. Joseph's hospital.
Luther, of 1531 East La Salle Avenue, was the president and owner of E. J.
Luther Beverage Company, 112 North Niles Avenue.  He had been ill for the
past five months.  As a Notre Dame undergraduate in 1924, moved there was
the senior cheerleader for one of his schools most famous teams, the Four
Horsemen group of that year.  He graduated from the N. D. law school in 1925
and also received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the school in 1969.
He practiced law in South Bend, 1926 through 1934.  After graduation from
law school, he was elected as a justice of peace for Portage Township and
served from 1927 through 1931.  He was nominated as the Republican candidate
for Fourth District City Councilman in 1942, but was defeated in the fall
collection.  His father, the late James and Luther, had been active in
Republican politics and was superintendent of the waterworks under Mayor
Franklin R. Carson.  On May 6, 1935, Luther was married to the former
Marguerite Pierce, who survived along with a son, Lawrence C..  He is also
survived by two brothers, Rev. Joseph A. Luther of Jamez Springs, New Mexico
James N. of Denver, Colorado; three sisters, Mrs. William F. Roemer of
South Bend, Sister Cecile, C. S. C., of St. Mary's Academy, South Bend, and
Sister Ann Cecile, C. S. C., of Flint, Michigan.  Also surviving are four
grandchildren.
            Luther was born on April 12, 1901 in South Bend.  He graduated
from St. Joseph's school in 1916, from the Notre Dame Preparatory School and
1920 and from the University in 1925.  He was admitted to the Supreme Court
of the state of Indiana in 1925 before beginning his law practice he was a
member of the Eagles, Elks, and Moose lodges, the Knights of Columbus,
Morris Park Country Club, The National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame,
the Notre Dame Club of the St. Joseph Valley, the University Club, and the
National Monogram Club.
            Funeral services will be held in his home parish, St. Joseph's
on Friday.  Friends may call at the Hickey Funeral Home, from 3 to 5 and 7
to 9 PM, on Wednesday and Thursday. Contributions in lieu of floral
offerings may be made to the cancer research or to any charity.

LUTHER-- Services for Edmund J. Luther, 70, of 1531 East La Salle Avenue,
who died Tuesday, will be at 11 AM Friday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church,
Rev. Donald F. Guertin, C. S. C., pastor, officiating.  Interment will be in
the Riverview Mausoleum.  Friends may call from 7 to 9 PM today and 3 to 5
and 7 to 9 PM Thursday in the Hickey Funeral Home, where a rosary will be
recited at 7 PM Thursday by members of Santa Maria Council 553, Knights of
Columbus.  At 7:30 PM today, parishioners out St. Joseph's Church will
conduct a prayer service in the funeral home.  Memorial contributions may be
made to cancer research or any charity.
