Elizabeth L. Magnuson Dec. 31, 1927 - Jan. 23, 2008
SOUTH BEND - Elizabeth L. Magnuson, 80, born December 31, 1927, passed away on January 23, 2008. Elizabeth was born in Dixon, IL, and married Dr. Charles W. Magnuson in St. Patrick's Church, Dixon, IL, on May 22, 1954. Dr. Magnuson died on October 2, 1986. Elizabeth was a graduate of St. Anthony School of Nursing, Rockford, IL. She performed her post-graduate obstetrical nursing in Jersey City, New Jersey. She was head nurse of labor and delivery at Cook County Hospital, Chicago, IL, and Elizabeth was the operating room nurse at St. Frances Hospital, Miami Beach, Florida. Elizabeth and Charles moved to South Bend with their family in 1967 from Omaha, Nebraska. She is survived by her five children, Dr. Charles Wesley (Linda) Magnuson, South Bend, Mary Lisa (Dr. Michael) Hazel of West Linn, Oregon, Steven John Magnuson, San Diego, CA, Janet Alice Magnuson, Oakland, CA, and Jill Elizabeth (Fred) Arroyo, Milwaukee, WI; and her three grandchildren, Brett and Nicholas Hazel, and Charlie Arroyo. Elizabeth is also survived by her sister, Mary DePasquele (Sterling, IL), and was preceded in death by her brother, John Popp. Elizabeth was very active in the community and involved with a number of charities. She especially loved art and the symphony. She was also very active in her church. Elizabeth was a board member of the Children's Dispensary from 1980 to the present, on the Women's Art League Board from 1976 to 1982 (charter member Women's Art League), she was an Art Center Board Trustee 1983-1985, president of the Women's Art League 1984-1985, she was a sorority officer of Psi Iota Xi, she was a Snite Museum of Art charter member, and a South Bend Symphony Auxiliary Life Member. She was on the St. Joseph County Medical Auxiliary Board from 1969 to 1972, Chairman Health Careers, and won the Indiana State Award in 1971 (Officer St. Joseph Medical Auxiliary), she was St. Mary's Academy Social Chairman, a St. Matthew Cathedral Eucharist Minister and in the Rosary Society, and was a member of the University Club at Notre Dame. Elizabeth was loved by many in the South Bend community and will be sorely missed. Western Ave., South Bend, IN 46629. Visitation will be today, January 25, 2008, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 1827 E. Ireland Road, South Bend, where a Rosary will be prayed at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 26, 2008, at 10 a.m. in the Cathedral of St. Matthew. Entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery, South Bend. For those who are unable to attend the funeral liturgy, condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
