Joe Mahler

Joe Mahler, 85, of 20531 Darden Road, South Bend, Ind., died following an extended illness at 3:35 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, in the Healthwin Specialized Care Facility, South Bend.

 

He was born on May 3, 1915, in Werschetz, Yugoslavia. He moved to South Bend from Worms, Germany, in 1956. Mr. Mahler was preceded in death by a stepson, Horst Linde, who died on June 7, 1997.

 

Mr. Mahler was a former employee of Circle Lumber, South Bend. He was a fine furniture maker, working for many furniture stores. Wood inlay was his special interest. At his own home workshop, he specialized in jewelry and sewing boxes.

 

He was a member of the St. Joe Kickers Sport Club, St. Joseph, Mich.

In November 1953, in Germany, he married Ida Kiefer, who survives. He is also survived by a stepson, Werner H. (Gloria) Linde of Niles; and by eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

 

A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, in First Missionary Church, Niles, with the Reverend Daniel D. Miller of the church officiating. Interment will be private, at a later date, at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens, Niles.

 

There will be no visitation.
