SOUTH BEND - Bernice T. Makowski, 84, of Meridian Nursing Center-Cardinal, formerly of South Camden Street, died at 3:25 a.m. Monday in the nursing home. Mrs. Makowski was a former employee of the University of Notre Dame. She was born Oct. 24, 1910, in Pittsburgh, and lived in South Bend most of her life.

On June 23, 1934, in South Bend, as Bernice Grzeszczyk, she married Bert Makowski. He died Aug. 14, 1991. She is survived by two daughters, Antoinette Mezzei and Lenore Koski, both of South Bend; a son, James of South Bend; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bert Grzeszczyk of South Bend. A daughter, Patricia Kapaun, died Sept. 25, 1987.

She was a member of the Rosary Sodality of St. Adalbert's Catholic Church. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Gardens Mausoleum of St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Funeral Home, where the parish rosary will be said at 4 p.m.
