Brother David Martin CSC, 85, of Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, died Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph Medical Center. He was a member of the Southwest Province of Holy Cross Brothers with headquarters in Austin, Texas. He was born March 8, 1901 in Chicago. He is survived by two sisters, Emily Martin, San Jose, Calif. and Jewel Hyland, San Antonio, Texas, and a brother, Charles of Guadalajara, Mexico.

 

Brother Martin entered the Holy Cross Novitiate in 1926 and professed his final vows in Portland, Ore. in 1930. After a year at St. Edward’s Hall at Notre Dame, he was assigned to work for the Holy Cross Father at the University of Portland, Ore., a position he held from 1928 to 1983, as university librarian and archivist. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Portland in 1978 for many achievements and outstanding work. In 1955 he received a master’s degree in library science from the University of Chicago. A book, American Catholic Convert Authors, was published in 1944.

 

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame with burial in Holy Cross Community Cemetery, on the campus of Notre Dame. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. today in Moreau Seminary, where a wake will be at 7:30 p.m.
