SOUTH BEND - Joseph E. "Joe" Martin, 25, of South Bend, IN, died as the result of a massive heart attack on Saturday, August 30, 2008. He was born on November 9, 1982, to Ernest E. Martin and Therese C. Bauters in Mishawaka, IN, and was a lifelong resident of South Bend. Joe graduated from St. Joseph High School in 2001 and studied culinary art at Ivy Tech in South Bend, IN, for three years. He worked as a chef at Tippecanoe Restaurant and various other local restaurants, including Lacopo's Pizzeria and Century Center. On January 23, 2004, he married Lilia R. Mirkhabutdinova in South Bend, IN. He is survived by his wife, Lilia R. (Mirkhabutdinova) of South Bend, IN; a daughter, Niena "Niya" Martin at home; his mother, Therese C. Bauters (husband, Rick) of South Bend, IN; his father, Ernest E. Martin (Julie) of South Bend, IN; a sister, Cecilia A. (Steve) Wroblewski of South Bend, IN; maternal grandparents, Joseph and Cecilia Bauters of South Bend, IN; paternal grandparents, Ernest and Joann Martin of Niles, MI; paternal great-grandmother, Thelma Fred of Niles, MI; three stepbrothers, Brett, Josh and Ryan Voreis, all of South Bend, IN; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Galina and Rustam Mirkhabutdinovi of Russia; godmother, MaryJo Bauters of Mishawaka, IN; godfather, Thomas Bauters of Akron, IN; a niece, Olivia A. Wroblewski of South Bend, IN; a nephew, Alex J. Wroblewski of South Bend, IN; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Joe was a member of St. Stanislaus/Holy Cross Parish. Joe enjoyed life! He was an avid Notre Dame, Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and NASCAR fan. Joe's passion was cooking, playing with his daughter, and spending time with his family and friends. He was named in Michiana Executive Journal magazine as one of Michiana's up-and-coming chefs.

 

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Thursday, Sept. 4, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM Friday, Sept. 5, in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, South Bend. Burial will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery on the campus of Notre Dame. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Niena "Niya" Martin Educational Trust Fund, c/o any 1st Source Bank.
