Ernest R. Mathews

LAKEVILLE - Ernest R. Mathews, 96, of Lakeville, IN, passed away at 6:45 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 2010, in Elkhart Hospice House. He was born on March 4, 1914, in Rochester, IN to Harley and Carrie (Dudgeon) Mathews. On January 31, 1959 in Elkhart, IN, he married Claire M. (Goodman) Mathews, who survives. Mr. Mathews is also survived by a stepson, Robert L. Johnson of Longs, SC. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Mildred Meiser, Martha Hoffman, Mary Kindig and Minnie Mathews and a brother, Herman Mathews. Mr. Mathews was a lifelong area resident, spending winters in Texas for twenty-four years. He retired from the Uniroyal Corporation as a mill operator after thirty years of service. He was a member of the First Brethren Church and the Uniroyal Retiree Club. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 5, 2010 in the Palmer Funeral Home, 314 S. Michigan St. Lakeville, IN. Rev. Larry Baker will officiate. Burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Ernest R. Mathews may be offered to the charity of the donor's choice or to The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc, 22579 Old U.S. 20 E.
