Charles Rene Matthews

June 5, 1917 - June 20, 1998

Charles Rene Matthews, 81, died on Saturday, June 20, in the home of his son, Allan P. Matthews of Glen Lee Trail in Granger, Ind. Mr. Matthews was born on June 5, 1917, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident. He retired from White Farm Equipment in 1972 and had previously been employed with the Studebaker Corp., Mastic Corp. and the New York Railroad.

 

Mr. Matthews married the former Harriet Szymczak on July 13, 1940, in South Bend. Mrs. Matthews preceded him in death on March 23, 1985. He is survived by two sons, James P. (Charlotte) Matthews of South Bend and Allan C. (Lois) Matthews of Granger; seven grandchildren, Gregory, John, David, Michael and Lori Matthews, all of South Bend, Theresa Floyd of San Francisco, Calif. and Jeffery Matthews of Hampton, Va.; four great-grandchildren, Jessica, Brian and Andrew Matthews and Cory Neese; and by two sisters, Elizabeth Fletcher and Irene Stachowiak, both of South Bend.

 

Mr. Matthews was a member of St. Casimir Catholic Church and an Army Veteran of World War II.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m on Tuesday in St. Casimir Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church, Granger.
