SOUTH BEND - Raymond A. Matthys, 78, of Crumstown Highway, South Bend, Ind., died at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, in his residence. He was born on Oct. 8, 1920, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident. He was the founder of the Matthys Milling and Farm Market. He also was a founder, member and usher of the Holy Family Catholic Church. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather, and may the Lord accept him as a good and faithful servant. Mr. Matthys was married on Nov. 20, 1943, to Florence Meert, who survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Elaine (James) Verleye, Marcia Sima and Ann (Mark) Ring, all of South Bend; two sons, Kenneth (Marcia) Matthys and John (Teresa) Matthys, both of South Bend; 23 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Martha (Henry) VanOverberghe of South Bend; and by a brother, Rene Matthys of South Bend. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret DeNeve, Angela VanOverberghe and Mary Matthys; three brothers, Maurice, Cyriel and Achiel Matthys; and by a grandson, Gregory Matthys.

 

Family and friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday in Holy Family Catholic Church with burial to follow in Highland Cemetery.
