Gizella T. Mauro

MISHAWAKA - Gizella T. Mauro, 80, of Berkley Circle, formerly of South Bend, Ind., passed away at 7:20 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 9, in her residence. Mrs. Mauro worked as a crossing guard at Our Lady of Hungary School, as head cook at St. Mary's of the Assumption and St. Patrick's, she was also a tutor in the Title One Program and was employed by St. Joseph and Key Bank. She was born on July 30, 1918, in South Bend, to Julius and Gizella Szalay, who both preceded her in death.

 

On Nov. 24, 1938, in South Bend, as Gizella Szalay, she married Anthony C. Mauro, who died on Nov. 28, 1994. She is survived by a daughter, Carmella (Lewis) Laderer of Mishawaka, Ind.; 5 sons, Tom (Terri) Mauro of Dewitt, Mich., Julius (Sara) Mauro of South Bend, Frank (Linda) Mauro of Kettering, Ohio, Joseph Mauro of Melbourne, Fla., and John (Rose) Mauro of Mishawaka; 18 grandchildren, Mari (Jeff) Lindke, Heidi (Keith) Walker, Michael Mauro, Suzanne Mauro, Julianne Mauro, Annie (Sergio) Carrillo, John Mauro, Mary Mauro, Kristen (Lester) Snodgrass, Erin Mauro, Robert Mauro, James Mauro, Kristin (Steve) Anderson, Molly (Michael) Paulson, Clinton Mauro, Anthony Mauro, Joseph Mauro, and Megan Mauro; six great-grandchildren, Nikolas Lindke, Corina Lindke, Amanda Lindke, Brianna Lindke, McKensey Anderson and Alivia Anderson; and by two brothers, Julius (Irene) Szalay and Michael Szalay, both of South Bend. Gizella was a member of the Sacred Heart and Rosary Society of Our Lady of Hungary Church and St. Bavo's Church.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be performed at 10 a.m. on Friday in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church, with Rev. James Shafer officiating. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue, where a Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. by the Sacred Heart and Rosary Society. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
