Rev. Bernard L. McAvoy CSC, 74, of Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, died at 6 p.m. Sunday in St. Joseph Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born on June 6, 1906 in Tipton, Ind., and entered the Holy Cross Seminary at Notre Dame in 1922. He made his final profession in 1928; graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1929; and after theological studies at Holy Cross College in Washington DC, was ordained to the priesthood at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame in 1933. After studying Medieval Philosophy at Medieval Institute in Toronto, he returned to Notre Dame and taught in the department of philosophy from 1936 to 1949. He taught basic curriculum courses as well as advanced courses in Medieval Philosophy. From 1949 to 1955 he was superior of Moreau Seminary at Notre Dame, and from 1955 to 1961 of Holy Cross College.

 

He returned to Notre Dame to teach from 1961 to 1965. At Notre Dame he also served in the residence halls for 18 years as prefect in Alumni and Dillon halls, and as rector of Morrissey and Fisher halls. From 1965 to 1972 he taught philosophy at the University of Portland in Oregon. After his retirement from teaching he served five years in a parish in Oakland, Calif., before returning to Corby Hall at Notre Dame. In 1978 he retired to Holy Cross House.

 

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Sacred Heart Church, with burial in the Community Cemetery on the campus. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. today at the Corby Hall Chapel, where a wake will be at 7:30 p.m.
