Rev. Charles I. McCarragher CSC, 78, of Holy Cross House, Notre Dame died at 12:30 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph Medical Center after an illness. At Notre Dame since 1939, he was a teacher, rector and prefect in the halls, prefect of discipline, vice president for student affairs, and director of financial aid and scholarships. From 1959 to 1973 he was provincial steward for the Indiana Province. From 1973 to 1978 he was assistant at Sacred Heart parish. While residing at Corby Hall, he assisted at Faith Hope Charity Chapel in downtown South Bend.

 

Born June 5, 1909 in Mt. Vernon NY, he entered Holy Cross in 1924 and made his final profession of vows in 1931. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 1932, he studied theology at Holy Cross College, Washington DC, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1936. He did graduate work at Loyola University, New Orleans, and Notre Dame, and received a masters degree in sociology from Notre Dame in 1940.

 

Serviuces will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame, with burial in Community Cemetery on the campus. A wake service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Moreau Seminary Chapel.
