Edward Thomas McCarthy

Services are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church on the University of Notre Dame campus for Edward T. McCarthy, 41, president of McCarthy Insurance Agency, who died at 7:30 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph Hospital aafter an extended illness.

 

Mr. McCarthy of 52667 Brooktrail Dr. was an agent for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co.

 

He was born on Dec. 2, 1931 in Chicago, and had lived here since 1940, coming from that city.

 

He married Barbara Trippel on Sept.14, 1957. She survives with three sons, Thomas J., Patrick L. and Dean E. and five daughters, Mary  Margaret, Mary Brigid, Mary Colleen, Maureen Stacy and Sara Christine, all at home; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth McCarthy of Chicago; and two sisters, Mrs. John (Patricia) Guion of Des Moines and Mrs. Thomas (Eileen) McKeon of South Bend.

 

He served in the Marine Corps from 1953 to 1955 attaining the rank of captain.

 

He was a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table, a board member of Christ Child Society and president in 1966 of the Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley. He was named Notre Dame “Man of the Year” in 1972.

 

He was also a member of the Mental Health Assn. and a member of the Christian Family Movement.

 

Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Hickey Funeral Home. The rosary will be recited in the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. today.
