  At his residence in German Township, two miles north of South Bend, on the 31st day of May, after a long and tedious suffering of nearly sixteen months, of Consumption, James M. McCartney, in the 49th year of his age. He is, as we are informed, the last remaining of a family of twelve children, all of whom have died of the same disease. He united himself with the M.E. Church at baptism at the hands of Bro. Morgan, minister in charge here, since his illness, and gave strong evidence of true conversion to God. He leaves a wife and four small children to mourn the loss of a husband and father.

[James M McCartney was born abt 1815 in Ohio to William C & Margery McCartney. On 19 Dec 1843, he married Louisa Clark in St. Joseph Co., Ind. She was the daughter of Thomas Clark and Susannah Crockett. James and Louisa's children were Horatio B, Benjamin F, Edward J, Rhodes, Charles F, Delana and Delbert. Of these, Benjamin, Edward, Charles and Delbert were still alive when James died and are mentioned in his will.]
