Robert R. McClure

Robert R. McClure, 79, of Hamilton Communities, New Carlisle, Ind., formerly of Canterbury Drive, South Bend, Ind., passed away on Saturday, Dec. 14, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. Robert was born on Oct. 19, 1923, in South Bend, to the late Fenton and Helen (Luhtanen) McClure, and was a lifelong area resident. In 1937, in South Bend, he competed and won a Soap Box Derby race. He attended the former South Bend Central High School where he was a 1941 graduate.

 

In October 1949, in South Bend, he married Barbara Lee Bock. In April 1977, in South Bend, he married Dolores R. Overman, who preceded him in death on Jan. 1, 2002. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Forrest, Warren and William McClure. Mr. McClure is survived by two daughters, Kathleen (Dennis) Berg of Granger, Ind., and Becky McClure of South Bend; three sons, Richard McClure of South Bend, James (Dawn) McClure of Houston, Texas, and Donald (Renee) McClure of New Carlisle; a stepson, Rick Overman of Boca Raton, Fla.; six grandchildren, Cindy Berg, Jennifer Berg, Jamin McClure, Jason McClure, Nicole McClure and Ashleigh McClure; four sisters, Evelyn Poppe of San Fernando, Calif., Helen Tinklin of Hayden, Idaho, Dorothy (Al) Walsh of Prospect Heights, Ill., and Judy (Andy) Hafner of Murray, Ky.; and by several nieces and nephews.

 

Mr. McClure was employed as a machinist for Bendix/Honeywell for 33 years before retiring in 1982. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, a member of the American Legion Post #50, former member of UAW Local 9, and was a former member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as an usher. He held a commercial pilot's license and was a member of the EAA. Among his many hobbies, he enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

 

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 17, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. Funeral services for Robert will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, in the funeral home, with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth, Ind.
