Sister Mary Bertha McDermott CSC

Sister Mary Bertha CSC, 78, died early this morning in St. Mary’s Convent. She was financial secretary  for the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross for the past 40 years. She was born as Mary McDermont in 1836 in Ireland. She entered the convent of the Holy  Cross in 1853, and professed her vows in 1857. In 1958 she was sent to open the school of the Immaculate Conception in Morris, Ill. In 1861 she was placed in charge of the orphans at St. Joseph asylum in Washington DC. In 1969 was was assigned as bookkeeperat St. Mary’s infirmary in Cairo, Ill., and the to Joliet, Ill, and in 1874 she was assigned to St. Mary’s here.

 

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
