Rev. James F. McElhone CSC, 73, associate editor of the Ave Maria magazine published by the Holy Cross Fathers at Notre Dame, died at 12:30 a.m. today in St. Joseph Hospital. Born Feb. 14, 1890 in Sharpsburg, Pa., he entered Holy Cross Seminary at Notre Dame in 1903. Upon his graduation from the University of Notre Dame in 1911 he entered the novitiate of the Holy Cross Fathers in July of that year and made his final profession of vows Sept. 14, 1913. The following four years he pursued theological studies at Holy Cross College in Washington, DC. He was ordained to the priesthood June 27, 1916 in Sacred Heart Church on the Notre Dame campus. He did graduate work in English at the University of Chicago and Columbia University, New York.

 

He was the author of five books, his most recently published in 1955 titled “Spirituality for the Postulate Novitiate and Scholasticate”. From 1916-1918 Father Mc Elhone was prefect at Notre Dame, and until 1934 was a member of the faculty at Notre Dame Seminary on campus. From a943-1945 he served assistant superior of the old community infirmary, living at the Moreau Seminary. He had been associated with the Ave Maria staff since 1930. His immediate survivors include one sister, Mrs. Margaret Vogle of Pittsburg, Pa. And one brother, Edward McElhone of West Elna, Pa.

 

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Corby Hall. The office of the dead will be recited at 5 p.m. Sunday in Sacred Heart Church, where the requiem mass will be said at 8:30 a.m Monday. Internment will be in the Community Cemetery on campus.
