SOUTH BEND - Melvin J. McGarrity, 86, of 19996 Miller Road, died shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday at Osteopathic Hospital after an extended illness. He had retired from Studebaker Corp. after 40 years of service. He was born April 24, 1896 in LaPorte and lived in South Bend most of his life, coming from LaPorte.

 

On Aug. 1, 1925, in South Bend, he married the former Bernice Grindle, who died in October 1971. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Patricia Wroubel of Plymouth, Mrs. Betty Sharp of Mishawaka, Mrs. Charlotte Lawson of Denver and Mrs. Virginia Austin of Decatur, Ill.; two sons, William of South Bend and Michael of California; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

 

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, with Rev. Timothy Murtaugh, pastor of South Side Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Sumption Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
