James P. McGhee

SOUTH BEND - James P. McGhee, 72, residing on U.S. 31 South, South Bend, Ind., passed away of natural causes at 11:17 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Mr. McGhee retired in 1984 as a produce clerk at Kroger's after 30 years of service. He worked in the produce department at several locations for Kroger's, including South Bend, Elkhart, Plymouth and LaPorte. He was a former trainer and manager at Kroger's. Mr. McGhee was born on Dec. 30, 1925, in Linton, Ind., to the late James and Jenny (Cunningham) McGhee. He had resided most of his life in South Bend.

 

On July 1, 1950, in South Bend, he married Beverly Jean Brice, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Jean (Bob) Horvath of Lapaz, Ind.; a son, James Brice (Janice) McGhee of South Bend; and by six grandchildren, David, Rebecca and Michael Horvath, all of Lapaz, and Daniel, Jeffrey and Amanda McGhee, all of South Bend.

 

Mr. McGhee was a member of the Ridgedale Presbyterian Church in South Bend, was a World War II Navy veteran serving in the occupational force in Japan and the Airborne Division, American Legion Post 152 in Indianapolis, was a member of the South Bend Civic Theatre and was a former Presbyterian Player, was a former choir director at Westminster Presbyterian Church in South Bend for 18 years, a former choir director at the First Christian Church in Mishawaka for five years, a romantic tenor for the Philharmonics in South Bend, and was very well-known in South Bend for his music abilities. He attended the Cincinnati School of Music and also attended Indianapolis University at Bloomington and South Bend. Mr. McGhee's wishes were to donate his body to the Indiana State Anatomical Board, associated with the Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis.

 

Memorial services will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. The Palmer Funeral Home, Lakeville, Ind., is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ridgedale Presbyterian Church, 1406 E. Ewing, South Bend, IN 46613.
