Sister Virginia Marie (Alice Virginia McHugh), CSC, 89, died on Monday, Dec. 6, in Saint Mary's Convent, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind. Sister Virginia Marie was born on Feb. 20, 1910, in Kalamazoo, Mich., to the late William Giles McHugh and Genevieve Margaret (Wright) McHugh.

 

She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross at Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind., on June 18, 1932, from Salt Lake City, Utah, and made final profession in the congregation on Aug. 15, 1938. From 1935 to 1939, Sister Virginia Marie taught music and high school in Woodland and Los Angeles, Calif. Sister returned to Salt Lake City to teach at Saint Mary of the Wasatch College from 1939 to 1953. Sister taught in Fresno, Calif., San Joaquin, from 1953 to 1957, and was then elected to the office of provincial superior of the Western Province of the Sisters of the Holy Cross. She served in that capacity from 1957 to 1963, living in Ogden, Utah. Sister Virginia Marie returned to California and was assigned to Holy Cross School, Mountain View, and San Joaquin School, Fresno, where she taught and was assistant librarian and counselor from 1963 until she retired to Saint Mary's Convent in September 1998.

 

A wake service was held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. today, Dec. 8, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, followed by interment at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind.
