Paul Elliott McLane

South Bend – Services for Paul Elliott McLane, 85, of 1954 Beverly Place, who died about 1 p.m. Monday in his home after an illness, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Holy Cross Catholic Church.

 

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

 

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Hickey Funeral Home, where a combined rosary will be said at 4:30 p.m. by Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 553 and Circle of Mercy, and a parish wake will be at 6:30 p.m.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to Gibault Foundation School for Boys, Terre Haute, Ind.

 

Mr. McLane was professor emeritus and retired in 1973 from the University of Notre Dame as an English professor. He was a professor at Seattle University from 1932 to 1946, serving as English Department head from 1938-46.

 

He was born July 17, 1907, in Seattle.

 

On Aug 16, 1947 in South Bend he married Alma M. Schellinger. She survives with two daughters, Alice M. McLane of Galena, Ill., and Patricia A. Starr of East Lansing, Mich.; two sons, Don P. of South Bend, and Michael M. of Indianapolis; three grandchildren; and a sister Anna M. McLane of South Bend

 

He was a graduate of Gonzaga Univeristy, Spokane, and the University of Washington, Seattle. He was the author of “Spenser’s Shepheardes Calendar: A Study in Elizabethan Allegory” and he was a specialist in Spenser and Shakespeare. He published many articles in scholarly journals and the Huntington Library Quarterly.

 

He was a member Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 553, Holy Cross Catholic Church, and the American Association of University Professors Modern Language Association.
