Brother Alan CSC, 81, of the University of Notre Dame, an organizer of the Bengal Bouts for the benefit of missions, died Sunday morning in St. Joseph Hospital. Hew as born March 5, 1878 in Arisaig, Nova Scotia, and was the former James McNeil.

 

He received the holy habit on Dec. 8, 1909 and made his perpetual profession on Dec. 8, 1912. For many years he was the prefect at Brownson Hall on the campus of Notre Dame. It was during that time that he was active in organizing athletics, including inter-hall competition and the Bengal Bouts. In 1926 Brother Anan left Notre Dame and became a traveling canvasser for Ava Maria magazine. He returned to Notre Dame in 1954, was assigned to the Community Infirmary in 1955 and has remained there since that time.

 

Surviving are a niece, Mrs. Margaret Cramer, Detroit, and two nephews, Donald McNeil, California and Michael McNeil, Nova Scotia.

 

The office of the Dead will be recited at 5 p.m. today in the Sacred Heart Church at Notre Dame. Services will be held there at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Community Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today in Columbia Hall at Notre Dame.
