March 23, 1915 - Aug. 20, 1999

Frances J. Messana, 84, formerly of West Seventh Street, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away on Friday, Aug. 20, at 12:50 p.m. in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Ind., after a brief illness.

Mrs. Messana was born on March 23, 1915, in Virden, Ill., as the daughter of the late Santro and Catherine (Ballatore) Catalino. She was a lifelong area resident. On June 6, 1936, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, as the former Frances J. Catalino, she married Michael J. Messana, who preceded her in death on Oct. 16, 1998.

Mrs. Messana is survived by two daughters, Ann Mary (Dean) Johnson of Mishawaka, and Kathy (Tony) Valenti of South Bend; seven grandchildren, Michael (Laurie) Johnson of Granger, Ind., Craig (Jamie) Johnson of Mishawaka, Deana (Mark) Hummel of Granger, Michelle Valenti of Indianapolis, Ind., Tony Jr. Valenti, Melanie (Joe) Valenti-Giolitto and Shelley Valenti, all of South Bend; 10 great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Megan, Trevor, Rachel and Maura Johnson, Alyssa, Matthew, McKenna Hummel, Christina Valenti and Alexandra Manderfeld; and by a sister, Kathryn (Ross) Messana of Mishawaka.

Mrs. Messana was a member of St. Bavo's Catholic Church, Mishawaka all of her life, a member of the Thieriens, De Amicis' Ladies Auxiliary, Mishawaka Women's Democratic Club and Good Fellow Club.

Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, where a wake prayer service will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian burial will be at noon on Tuesday in St. Bavo's Catholic Church, Mishawaka with Rev. James Shafer officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka.
