Brother Lucidus Millenbach CSC

Nov. 2, 1910 - July 27, 1999

South Bend Tribune 7/29/1999

Br. Lucidus (James) Millenbach, CSC, 88, of Dujarie House at the Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, died after a long illness on July 27 in his residence. Br. Lucidus was born in Houghton, Mich., on Nov. 2, 1910, one of four children born to the late George and Anna (Didier) Millenbach.

Principally a farmer by birth and trade, but with some technical training as well, he entered Holy Cross in September 1937 in Watertown, Wis., received the habit on Feb. 1, 1938 at St. Joseph Novitiate, Rolling Prairie, Ind., and first pronounced vows on Feb. 2, 1939. Br. Lucidus was then assigned to serve as an aide at the Community Infirmary on Douglas Road. After a year he was asked to teach at Central Catholic High School in South Bend. In 1941 he prefected at St. Charles Boys Home in Milwaukee, Wis. From 1943 to 1947 he returned to the Community Infirmary to take up his former duties, then from 1947 to 1953 he worked in maintenance at the Holy Cross general administration headquarters in New York City.

In 1953 Br. Lucidus returned once more to the Community Infirmary, where he remained, despite several substantial changes in both program and structure, until illness forced his move to Dujarie House in 1998.

Br. Lucidus's nearly 45 years of dedicated devotion in assisting in the care of the infirm members of Holy Cross was legendary. Cheerful though retiring by nature, and admirably prayerful, he attended to his tasks with such care that it was evident he saw God in those whom he served. When the Community Infirmary became Holy Cross House after the brothers built Dujarie House in 1966 to care for members of the brother's provinces, Br. Lucidus remained on the staff at Holy Cross House, which served members of the provinces of priests.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, in St. Joseph Chapel at the Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, 54515 State Road 933 North, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 3 p.m., with burial immediately after in St. Joseph Cemetery on the Village grounds.

The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
