Rev. Joseph S. Miller CSC, 74, of Corby Hall, University of Notre Dame, died  at 6:12 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross House, following a lengthy illness. He was born Feb. 24, 1909 in Denver, Colo., and lived in Memphis, Tenn. For a number of years before attending St. Edward’s University in Austin, Tex. He entered Holy Cross Seminary, Notre Dame, in 1931; made his first profession of vows on Aug. 16, 1934; and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1937. After theological studies at Holy Cross College, Washington, DC, he was ordained to the priesthood on June 15, 1941 in Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame.

 

He served as secretary to the Superior General of the Congregation of the Holy Cross in New York from 1941-43 and to Military Ordinate in 1945. He taught at Holy Cross Seminary, Notre Dame, from 1944-45. From 1968-70, he was rector of Holy Cross Hall, Notre Dame; from 1970-71, he assisted in the Office of Province Development; and from 1971 until his death, he was manager of Corby Hall, Notre Dame. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Cornelia Miller, and a sister, Nelia Miller, both of Memphis, Tenn., and a brother, Russell of Chicago.

 

Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame, with Rev. John C. Gerber CSC, Assistant Provincial officiating. Rev. Leonard N. Banas CSC will give the homily. Burial will be in Community Cemetery, Notre Dame. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Monday at Moreau Seminary Chapel, Notre Dame, where a wake service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Rev. Thomas McDonagh CSC will give the eulogy. The Hickey Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements.
