Robert L. Mitchell

Robert L. Mitchell, 75, of Southernview Drive, South Bend, Ind., died at 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 14, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center. Robert was born on Dec. 8, 1924, in South Bend, to Walter L. and Alice (DeWinne) Mitchell. On Oct. 11, 1947, he married Margaret Schuttrow, who survives. He is also survived by three sons, James (Annette) Mitchell and Charles (Gina) Mitchell, both of Osceola, Ind., and William (Janet) Mitchell of South Bend; and by three daughters, Mary Ann (Malcolm) Cain, Suzanne Gardini and Jeanne (Jeffrey) DuBois, all of South Bend; eighteen grandchildren, Robert Zimmer, Brian (Jennifer) Zimmer, Brenda Zimmer, Megan Mitchell, Michael Mitchell, John Mitchell, Thomas Mitchell, Anna Marie (Joseph) Pagels, Christy Gardini, Jacob Mitchell, Steven Mitchell, Daniel Mitchell, Matthew DuBois, Mark DuBois, Jamie Mitchell, Nicholas Mitchell, Brian Mitchell and Christopher Mitchell; three great- grandchildren, Joseph, Alex and Julia; and by two sisters, Mary Lou (Eugene) Priebe of Spring Lake, Mich., and Carol Ann (Jim) Snyder of DeLand, Fla. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Robert Gardini. Robert retired from the South Bend Fire Department in 1973, and also retired as a salesman from Bearing Headquarters of South Bend. During World War II he served in the Pacific Theatre of action with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a 1942 graduate of Riley High School, and was a member of American Legion Post #50.

 

A funeral Mass for Robert L. Mitchell will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 18, in St. Matthew Cathedral, with Fr. Michael Heintz officiating. Burial will take place in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 17, in the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 2718 South Michigan Street, South Bend, where a Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. The family request memorial donations be made in Robert's name to the Bishop Crowley Education Fund, St. Matthew Cathedral School, 1015 E. Dayton Street, South Bend, IN 46613.
