Brother Thomas Mittendorf, CSC, 62, died after an illness on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 2, at Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Ind. The son of Roy and Nelle (Thrapp) Mittendorf, Br. Thomas was born on Jan. 4, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio.

 

After graduating from the Brothers' St. Edward High School in Lakewood, he entered Holy Cross in 1955, made his first profession of vows on Aug. 16, 1956, and his perpetual profession on Aug. 16, 1959. He is survived by two brothers.

 

After studies at both Notre Dame and St. Edward's University in Texas he worked as a clerk at the Notre Dame Post Office from 1958 to 1968, and at the province business office in the treasurer's department from 1968 to 1980, when ill health in the form of a nervous condition forced him to confine his activities to staff assistance at Columba Hall, his residence since 1968, and then at Schubert Villa at the Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, where he moved in 1997.

 

Br. Thomas's professional skills were in bookkeeping, and he was known both at work and in community for his even temperament, his reliability, his patience, his ungrudging generosity, and his meticulous precision and punctuality.

 

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, in St. Joseph Chapel at the Brothers' Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, 54515 St. Road 933 N., followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 3 p.m., with burial immediately afterward in St. Joseph's Cemetery on the village grounds. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
