Sister Maria Gemma Mulcaire CSC

Sister Maria Gemma CSC, 85, of Saint Mary’s Convent, died at 9:50 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born Ella M. Mulcaire on Aug. 18, 1896 in Limerick, Ireland and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross at St. Mary’s on Jan. 6, 1915 coming from Chicago. Surviving are two sisters, Sister Aloysia Marie CSC of Holy Cross School in South Bend and Katherine Mulcaire in Ireland, and three brothers, Patrick and Gene Mulcaire of South Bend, and Stephen of Ireland.

 

She was received as a novice on Jan. 6, 1915 and took her final vows on Aug. 15, 1917. She was assigned to teach in elementary schools conducted by the Sisters of Holy Cross. She taught in South Bend, St. Mary of the Lake in Gary, Fort Wayne, Elkhart, Michigan City, LaPorte and East Chicago. She also taught in Chicago; Austin, Texas; Davenport, Iowa; and Washington DC. She has resided at Saint Mary’s Convent since 1978.

 

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Our Lady of Loretto and burial will be in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, St. Mary’s. A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Friends may call until services at St. Mary’s Convent Parlors.
