Sister Kathryn (Sister Bernita) Mulligan CSC

SOUTH BEND - Sister Kathryn (Sister Bernita) Mulligan, CSC, 83, was born in Denver, CO, to the late Bernard Joseph Mulligan and Elizabeth B. Brennan. She is survived by her sister, Sister Mary Mulligan CSC, Saint Mary's; sisters-in-law, Ann Newman and Marilyn Mulligan; a nephew, John Mulligan; niece, Helen Sanford; grandniece, Jayme Barr Torres; and great-grandniece, Amber Barr. Sister is predeceased by her brothers, William and Bernard Mulligan; a sister, Betty Mulligan; and by the following: Sisters M. Romula, M. Alexis, M. Bernard, M. Coaina, M. Helen Rose and Ann Catherine, all members of the Sisters of the Holy Cross.

 

Sister Kathryn entered the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1941, received her BA in education from Saint Mary of the Wasatch, Salt Lake City, UT, and taught 34 years in elementary schools in the West. She earned an MS from Gonzaga U. and an MS in gerontology from the Andrus Gerontology Center, USC, Los Angeles. Sister was very busy in the field of gerontology, designing programs for the elderly and recruiting and training volunteers to minister to the elderly. Diminishing health brought her to Saint Mary's and retirement. Sister was active in the ministry of prayer until her death.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Reception of the Body will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. Funeral liturgy will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
