William H. Murphy

June 7, 1926 - May 20, 2001

William "Bill" Host Murphy, 74 years old, residing on Stonehedge Lane in South Bend, passed away at 4:51 A.M. on Sunday, May 20, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital, South Bend, after an extended illness. Mr. Murphy was born on June 7, 1926 in South Bend to the late Joseph P. and Edna Emma (Host) Murphy. He has been a lifelong area resident. On September 11, 1987 at the Grace United Methodist Church in South Bend, he married the former Barbara (Bright) Mellinger who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Molly (Geoffrey Pangrac) Kehr of Tucson, AZ, and Catlan (Robert) Bell of Granger; one son, Dr. Thomas (Dr. Laura J. David) Murphy of Cleveland, OH; one step-son, Kent A. Mellinger of Clermont, FL; two grandchildren, Megan Ann and Erin Elizabeth Murphy of Cleveland; and one brother, Robert Murphy of Las Vegas. One sister, Mary Virginia Mesch, preceded in death.

Mr. Murphy was employed with Lyon Metal Products in Aurora, IL, since 1950. He was in sales and currently a consultant for the company, training over one hundred salespeople. He was a 1944 graduate of Central Catholic High School in South Bend and a 1949 graduate from the University of Notre Dame. Mr. Murphy was honored in Who's Who in the World-Millenium Issue and a member of MENSA, an international organization containing people with intelligence within the top two percent of the population. He was a 30 year member of the South Bend Press Club where he participated in 25 consecutive "Hoaxes" Shows. Mr. Murphy served his country with the United States Navy and he was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in South Bend.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at the Grace United Methodist Church, 3012 S. Twyckenham Drive, South Bend, Rev. Hosea W. Drake, pastor of the church, will officiate. Graveside services and burial will take place at a later date in Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 P.M. on Tuesday, May 22nd, at the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
