Margaret Cecilia Murray

Margaret Cecilia (Jones) Murray, 89, passed away on Sunday evening, Jan. 23. She died peacefully in her sleep in Saint Joseph's Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born on March 23, 1910, in Jackson, Tenn. After graduating in 1931 from Rosary College, River Forest, Ill., with a degree in Library Science, she worked in the library at the University of Notre Dame until her marriage to Edward J. Murray in 1936.

 

Mr. Murray was a graduate of Notre Dame, class of 1931. She worked in the South Bend Public Library from 1963 until her retirement in 1975. She was preceded in death by Mr. Murray in 1988, and by her brother and her parents. Homemaker and the mother of three children, she resided on North Frances Street from 1941 until 1997. Survivors include her daughter, Justine Murray Kraft; and her two sons, John Edward and William Lawrence Murray; and by five grandchildren, John, Margaret, Michael, William and Ellen.

 

Mrs. Murray resided in the St. Paul's Retirement Community where she was president of the Assisted Living Resident Council. She was an active member of the Schuyler Colfax Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution for over 20 years. She served on the chapter's genealogical records committee as chairman and member. She was, for many years, secretary of Sacred Heart Parish's chapter of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. She belonged to the University Club and the Shamrock Club; she was also a faithful volunteer at the Logan Center, the Archives of the Studebaker Museum and the Northern Indiana Center for History.

 

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Jan. 26, in the McGann Funeral Home, 2313 E Edison Road. The Holy Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame. Interment will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Logan Center.
