Walter Murray Jr.

Sept. 18, 1928 - June 5, 2001

Mr. Walter Murray Jr., 72, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, who resided on Pine Road, South Bend, Ind., passed from this life after a lengthy illness at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, in his residence.

On Sept. 18, 1928, in Okalona, Miss., he was born to the union of the late Walter and Cora (Braylock) Murray Sr. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Denda Winston; a son, Derrick Reynolds; and by a sister, Lena Bell Murray.

He relocated to South Bend in 1947, coming from Racine, Wis. In South Bend, in 1991, he and Estella Powell-Winston were united in marriage. Mr. Murray owned and operated a rubbish removal service, and was a member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church.

His loss will be mourned by his wife, Estella; five daughters, Barbara Price, Saundra Murray, Warlena Brown and Sharon Phillips, all of South Bend, and Gail (Charles) Humble of Palm Beach, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Desiree McNeal of Boise, Idaho; four sons, Steven Reynolds, Byron Murray, Anthony Murray and Cornell Murray, all of South Bend; 37 grandchildren, which included Gwendolyn Turner who cared for him during his illness; 120 great-grandchildren; two nieces, Lena (Joe) Greer of South Bend and Cathy (Jace) Blackful of Paw Paw, Mich.; two great-nieces, two great-great-nieces and two great-great-nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Murray will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, June 8, in the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.
