Franz F. Nabicht

SOUTH BEND - Mr. Franz F. Nabicht, 80, of South Bend, passed away Friday at 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul's Retirement Center. A lifelong area resident, he was born here on December 6, 1927, to Franz F. and Mary A. "May (Applegate) Nabicht Sr. On October 22, 1962, he married Glenna E. Garn in South Bend, who passed away on March 31, 1976. He was a retired industrial crane operator, having worked at Studebaker's and Wheelebrator. Mr. Nabicht is survived by his daughter, Karen E. (John) Wallis, and one granddaughter, Katherine E. Wallis, all of Frisco, TX; and a brother, Carl J. (Nancy) Nabicht of Elkhart, IN. His life was really dedicated to scouting, however, serving from his youth until very late in life as a leader of Troop #111 at St. Matthew's Parish and even service for a time as camp director of Camp Tamarack at Wood Lake. He received numerous awards and honors from the LaSalle Council and the Boy Scouts of America, among them were: The Silver Beaver Award in 1960, Award of Merit, St. George Award, and the Scout Master Award of Merit. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami St. Friends may call Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Chapel, 435 S. Ironwood at Jefferson. Entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Franz's memory to the LaSalle Council of the Boy Scouts of America, 1340 South Bend Ave., South Bend, IN 46617; or to St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami St., South Bend, IN 46613.
