Rev. Arthur W. Near CSC

Word has been received of the June 26 death of Rev. Arthur W. Near CSC, 66, of Mazatlin, Sinaloa, Mexico. He was born on Jan. 3, 1915 in Detroit, Mich., and entered the Congregation of Holy Cross on Aug. 15, 1936. He graduated from The University of Notre Dame in 1941 and competed theological studies at Holy Cross College, Washington DC. He was ordained to the priesthood at Sacred Heart Church at Notre Dame on June 10, 1945. He received his masters degree in history and economics from the University of Texas in 1950, and taught at the University of Portland in Oregon from 1948 to 1960. He was chaplain to the Sisters of St. Joseph, Nazareth, Mich. from 1960 to 1963, and taught history at Holy Cross Seminary, at Notre Dame, from 1963 to 1966.. From 1966 to 1977 he served as assistant pastor in various churches in Hayward, Calif.

 

Services will at 10 a.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Church, with burial in Holy Cross Community Cemetery, on the campus. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Moreau Seminary Chapel, where a wake will be observed at 7:30 p.m.
