Mrs. Nowicki, 54, Dies; Verdict Witheld


A verdict in the death of Mrs. Stella Nowicki, 54, of 1126 N. Fremont St., whose body was found in the St. Joseph River at 7 a.m. Sunday, will be withheld until an investigation can be completed. Dr. Edward S. Shelley, county coroner, said today.   Deputy Coroner Gustave Schuttrow said her body had been in the water for about four hours.   She was identified at the Hickey Funeral Home by her husband, Anthony F. Nowicki and her daughter, Thecia, who reported her missing about 11 p.m. Saturday.   Theron H. Brown, 31 of 1320 East Brook Dr., discovered her body on a sandbar about 75 feet from shore, near Woodlawn Blvd. and Riverside Dr.   Police and the fire department’s Squad 21 boat crew removed her body from the water.   Mrs. Nowicki was born in Poland Feb. 3, 1903, and was married to Mr. Nowicki in 1923. in South Bend. She is survived by her husband, a daughter at home; and three sisters, Mrs. Louise Guzowski, Mrs. William Eherenman and Mrs. Ben Piochoski, all of South Bend. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today in the Hickey Funeral Home where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. William F. Smith of the Cathedral of St. James (Episcopal) will officiate and burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
