Sigmund E. Nurenberg

SOUTH BEND - Sigmund E. ''Ziggy'' Nurenberg, 84, of South Bend, Ind., passed away following a long illness on Sunday morning, Nov. 16, in the Ironwood Health & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born on April 11, 1913, in South Bend, to Julius and Wilhelmine (Jeske) Nurenberg.

He is survived by his wife, Helen M. Berkheiser, who he married on Nov. 20, 1971.

 

He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Susan Disbrow of Mishawaka, Ind.; a stepson, Michael Berkheiser of Portland, Ore., several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and by a brother, Robert Nurenberg of South Bend.

 

Mr. Nurenberg was a Navy veteran of World War II and of the Korean Conflict. He retired as a postal supervisor with the United States Postal Service after 32 years service. After retirement he served as treasurer of The South Bend Post Office Credit Union. He also worked at Associates and The National Bank, and did volunteer work for the Civil Defense and Meals On Wheels.

 

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and served as president and secretary of the congregation. He was a member of the church choir and taught Sunday School and Bible School for over 50 years. He also led Bible service at the Hope Rescue Mission. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, in Peace Lutheran Church. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the church. The Welsheimer Funeral Home handled family arrangements.
