South Bend - Kenneth C. Oakes, 83, of Rue Basset, died at 3:50 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph's Medical Center after an illness. Mr. Oakes retired from South Bend Sobenite Plastics Co. as plant manager after 37 years. He was born Sept. 27, 1911, in Hartford and lived in this area for 39 years, coming from Benton Harbor.
On June 23, 1937, in Michigan City, he married Jennie E. Stokes. She survives with two stepdaughters, Ellen J. Johnston of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Jenette Spaulding of South Bend; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ardath Prell of Marcellus and Margaret Funk of Trenton, Mich.; and a brother, Neal of Three Rivers. He was a member of Clay United Methodist Church, Optimist Club and past exaulted (sic) ruler of BPOE 235.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the church. Welcomer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, is in charge of arrangements.
