Frederick J. O'Laughlin

Dec. 16, 1922 - Dec. 15, 1996

Frederick J. O'Laughlin of Cypress Way, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 11:50 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, after suffering a massive heart attack and stroke.

Mr. O'Laughlin was born in Boston, Mass. He served in the World War II European Theatre of the Army Air Corps. His service record reflects over 50 B-24 flying missions, three enemy captures and interment as a P.O.W., for which he was awarded the Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Cross. He was discharged as a Colonel in 1945.

Frederick married Rachel C. Blough of North Liberty during his military service. He began civil service work as a letter carrier and postmaster in New Carlisle. In 1986, he retired from the postal service. In the last several years Mr. O'Laughlin has been involved with Widow-to-Widow and Hospice of St. Joseph County.

Mr. O'Laughlin was preceded in death by his wife Rachel in 1990. He is survived by his sisters, Catherine Silvers of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mary Lou Galloucis of Boston, Mass.; his daughters, Frances McCarthy, Elizabeth Steinfort, Deborah O'Laughlin-Bernard and Shirley Suhr; his son, Mark O'Laughlin; and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church of South Bend at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The family requests donations be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, or the Moody Bible Institute, in lieu of flowers.
