SOUTH BEND - Brother Just Paczesny, CSC, 71, a member of the Midwest Province of the Congregation of Holy Cross, died at 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, following surgery at St. Joseph's Medical Center. Brother Just resided at Columba Hall, University of Notre Dame, and was retired.

 

He was born in South Bend, Ind., on June 13, 1926. A member of St. Hedwig Parish, he attended St. Hedwig School and South Bend Catholic High School before joining the Brothers of Holy Cross in 1943. He made first profession of vows in 1946. He held Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Notre Dame. He celebrated his 50th jubilee of religious profession with a Mass at St. Hedwig Church in 1996. For close to 45 years Brother Just served as teacher or administrator in Holy Cross high schools and colleges throughout the United States: California, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio, Arizona and Pennsylvania. At the University of Notre Dame he was, at various times, hall rector at Alumni Hall, Vice-President for Student Affairs, and Director of Student Services. He also served for five years as Dean of Students at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and two years as Director of Admissions at Holy Cross College, Notre Dame.

 

He was principal of Holy Trinity High School in Chicago, Ill.; Reitz Memorial High School in Evansville, Ind.; and Marquette High School in Michigan City, Ind. He also served as the Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Chicago, and Vicar of Christian Formation in the Diocese of Phoenix.

 

Brother Just is survived by sister-in-law, Gladys Paczesny; nephew, John (Judy) Paczesny, all of South Bend; niece, Carolyn Kasdorf (Dan), from Pendleton, Ind.; great-nephews, Gary and Kevin Paczesny; and great-nieces, Liesl and Marah Kasdorf. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Wilma (Wituski) Paczesny; and by his brother, Alfred J. ''Bud'' Paczesny.

 

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at St. Joseph Chapel at the Holy Cross Brothers Center, 1801 N. Michigan, and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday in St. Joseph Chapel, with burial to follow in the community cemetery at the Brothers Center. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brothers of Holy Cross Development Fund.
