George M. Pence

Sept. 28, 1908 - March 2, 1999

George M. Pence, 90, of U.S. 31 North, died at 3:55 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2, in Regency Place of South Bend, Ind.

Mr. Pence was born on Sept. 28, 1908, in Indianapolis, Ind., to William and Anna Pence, and lived in South Bend since 1946, coming from Indianapolis.

On June 13, 1930, in Indianapolis, he married Julia A. Haney, who preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 1981.

He is survived by a son, David W. (Judi) Pence of Novato, Calif.; two grandchildren, Stephen D. Pence of Benicia, Calif., and Nancy L. Pence of Elyria, Ohio; and by five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Pence was the founder of Pence-Dickens Office Equipment in South Bend, which later became PDH Office Products, one of the largest companies of its type in the area.

He was a member of the National Association of Cost Accountants, where he was a past president, a former member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, the South Bend Shrine Club, and was a member of the South Bend Country Club.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the chapel of Riverview Cemetery, with Rev. Mary Hubbard of Central United Methodist Church officiating. Entombment will follow.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street.
