SOUTH BEND - Rev. Edmund A. Peters, 81, died at 9:14 p.m. March 16, 2008, in the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., in South Bend. Born the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund T. Peters of Detroit, MI, Rev. Peters received his preparatory training at Concordia High School and Junior College at Fort Wayne, IN, and was a 1950 graduate of Concordia Theological Seminary, St. Louis, MO. He served as a vicar (1948-49) at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Meriden, CT. He married Dorothy R. Hintz of Wallingford, CT, July 22, 1950. He was ordained into the Holy Ministry and installed as pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Okauchee, WI, on August 13, 1950, where he served as pastor until March 1954. During this time he organized the Beautiful Savior Lutheran congregation, Waukesha, WI. In March 1954 he was installed as missionary-at-large in Kalamazoo, MI, and organized the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church until October 1963. He was elected counselor of the Michigan District Lutheran Women's Missionary League. He did post-graduate work in education and sociology at Western Michigan University.

 

In November 1963 he was installed as pastor at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, South Bend, IN. He served on the Indiana District Board of Education and Board of Social Ministry. He was district vice president from 1970-74, and also was circuit counselor from 1965-69. In 1992 he retired as pastor and served as Emeritus Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elkhart, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy of 55 years, on October 23, 2005. Rev. Peters is survived by five children, Judith Peters of South Bend, IN, Rebecca (Paul) Veen of Elkhart, IN, Mark (Cherie) Peters of Indianapolis, IN, Greg (Phyllis) Peters of Littleton, CO, and Tim (Shelley) Peters of Lebanon, IN; and six grandchildren, Gina Joiner of Erie, CO, Megan Peters of Indianapolis, IN, Calvin, Evan and Ian Veen of Elkhart, IN, and Willow Peters of Lebanon, IN. Rev. Peters loved his Michigan teams and watching sporting events, golfing, and spending time with his beloved family. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Rev. Peters will be remembered for his caring and loving ministry to so many others. He will be dearly remembered.

 

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday, March 19) in the Palmer Funeral Home, River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. A service of celebration will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 20, in Trinity Lutheran Church, 420 S. West Boulevard, Elkhart, IN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Peters Memorial Fund at Trinity Lutheran Church, Elkhart, IN.
