Dessie M. Pettaway

SOUTH BEND - Dessie M. (Lockhart) Pettaway, 82, of 602 Birdsell St., died at 6:01 p.m. Saturday in St. Joseph's Medical Center after an illness. She was a retired employee of Northern Indiana Children's Hospital. Mrs. Pettaway was born Aug. 12, 1912, in Homer, La., and lived in this area for 50 years, coming from Louisiana.

 

She married Elder Weldon D. Lockhart. He died in 1975. Mrs. Pettaway is survived by two daughters, Mae D. Johnson of Los Angeles and M. Anne Magee of South Bend; five sons, Weldon D. Jr. of Los Angeles, Timothy of Palmdale, Calif., James of Washington, David of Lansing and Rev. Samuel of Atlanta; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Benjamin of South Bend; and a brother, Herman Bullock of South Bend. Mrs. Pettaway was a missionary, a financial captain and a member of the Mothers Board, the Nurse's Unit and a member of Saints Memorial Church of God in Christ.

 

Services will be at noon Friday in the church. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the church, where a wake service will be held at 6 p.m. Chapel Hill Funeral Home, Osceola, is in charge of arrangements.
